Indian Head Massage
History of Indian Head Massage
In Indian life massage has always played an important part. In early Ayurvedic texts dated 4000 years ago they describe the use of herbs, spices and aromatic oils used with massage and the important effects such as to strenthen muscles, firm skin and also encourage the body’s own healing energy.
Massage occurs across the generations in India as an integral part of family life. Indian Head Massage began from this rich tradition of family grooming.
Head massage has been practised for over a thousand years. The concept was originally developed by women who used different oils according to the season, coconut, seseame, almond, olive oil, herbal oils, buttermilk, mustard oil and henna were all used to keep their long hair strong and in beautiful condition.
Barbers practised these same skills on their male clients. They used to visit their homes, cutting hair and offering champi (head massage) as part of the treatment.
The word shampoo comes from the Hindi word ‘champi’ meaning massage of the head.
In many locations it is still common today to go to a barber’s shop, have a wet shave and get a head massage as part of the treatment.
Head massage is practised in many locations in India, on street corners, in markets and on the beach.
